How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Harness Fit (Size Guide 2025)

Why Harness Fit Matters

A harness that’s too tight can rub and restrict movement, while one that’s too loose risks slipping off entirely. The right fit keeps your dog:

  • Safe from escape or choking hazards

  • Comfortable on every walk

  • Confident to enjoy adventures without restrictions

At Dogistry, we design no-pull harnesses with adjustable straps to ensure a secure yet comfortable fit for dogs of all sizes.

Step 1: Measure Your Dog’s Chest Girth

The chest girth is the most important measurement for a harness.

  • Use a soft measuring tape.

  • Wrap it around the widest part of your dog’s ribcage (usually just behind the front legs).

  • Note the number in inches.

👉 Tip: If your pup is between sizes, always size up for comfort.

Step 2: Measure Your Dog’s Neck

Some harnesses also require a neck measurement.

  • Wrap the tape loosely around the base of your dog’s neck, where the collar would normally sit.

  • Make sure you can slip two fingers between the tape and your dog’s fur.

Step 3: Weigh Your Dog

Weight can also help confirm size. While not the only factor, it’s useful when your dog is between measurements.

Step 4: Match Measurements to the Size Chart

Once you have your dog’s chest girth, neck size, and weight, compare it with the Dogistry harness size chart to find the best fit.

Signs Your Harness Fits Perfectly

✅ You can fit two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body.
✅ The harness doesn’t rub, pinch, or leave marks.
✅ Your dog walks comfortably without slipping out.
✅ The leash attachment sits securely without shifting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Guessing size: Always measure—every brand is different.

  • Skipping adjustments: Harness straps should be snug but not restrictive.

  • Over-tightening: Comfort is as important as security.
